As long as the discharge requirements are getting more and more demanding, conventional biological treatments are far from being sufficient. Therefore, tertiary treatment is required.
Berghof tubular UF is an efficient and competitive technology for removing the suspended and colloidal matter that get outs from the existing waste water treatment plant. In this way, direct UF allows producing a high-quality effluent free of solids, turbidity < 1 NTU. Moreover, the ability of tubular membranes to handle high concentrations of suspended matter allows the operation with high recoveries (> 95 – 98%) and minimum reject volumes. In the case that salt removal is required, the UF permeate (SDI < 3) can be directly treated with reverse osmosis.
When there is a need for improving the effluent quality in existing plants, tubular ultrafiltration is installed after the biological treatment, usually based on conventional activated sludge or SBR plants. The effluent from the clarifier is fed to the ultrafiltration membranes, producing a polished permeate and a concentrated reject, which is sent back to the upstream DAF process, if it exists, or to the biological reactor.
The UF permeate can be discharged to the sewer or surface water, and it is also possible to reduce the water footprint by reusing this stream, either directly or after removing the dissolved compounds with reverse osmosis.
