Wastewater treatment in chemical & pharmaceutical industries

In the chemical industry, more and more producers are implementing processes to minimize the water they draw from external sources. This means that less wastewater is discharged and more wastewater is being reused as process water. The wastewater which is generated during the chemical production usually contains materials which are toxic, but also substances which are very difficult to biodegrade. Many conventional wastewater treatment systems are unable to handle such challenging streams.

The production of medicines must also meet the highest standards and protocols, making the quality of process water critical for the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, the high quality of the process water is a requirement for the sterilization of medical devices and storage tanks. Pharmaceutical wastewater streams are characterized by high chemical oxygen demand (COD), variable strengths and peak loads in the amount and concentration of waste.
