Wastewater treatment in the textile and tannery industries

The manufacture of leather requires a lot of water not only for the production process but also for the cleaning, de-hairing and soaking of the hides. Due to different additives that are added during production, the wastewater contains a high alkali content, chemical substances (chromium and sulfite) and organic substances. Therefore, it is not possible to dispose of the wastewater directly to domestic sewage treatment plants.

Untreated wastewater which originates from tanneries contains extremely high levels of TSS, TDS, BOD, COD, sulfate, sodium and calcium. These values exceed the prescribed limitations and can create a potential threat to humans and the environment. It is critical that the wastewater from the production of skins be intensively treated before they can be discharged.

Berghof Membranes Project Reference

External MBR pre-treatment  in ZLD  wastewater treatment plant – tannery industry

A company in India services the wastewater treatment needs of its 130+ member tanneries via a common effluent treatment plant (CETP). Due to the volume of wastewater generated from the tannery industry and the need to reduce discharge levels, the company needed a more effective MBR system to replace the existing low energy aerated MBR.

Membrane products for the textile and tannery industries

The textile industry is one of the most water-intensive production industries in the world. Water is used throughout the manufacturing process and is critical for various flushing procedures. As a result, high volumes of wastewater are generated that contain high organic pollutants, high sulphate concentrations, chemicals, toxins and color.
Berghof Membranes offers a complete line of membrane solutions for the textile and tannery industries. See below for the related membrane products.
