FAQ: Landfill Leachate Treatment with Tubular MBR

Landfill leachate contains high concentrations of organic matter, ammonia, and inorganic salts that lead to rapid fouling in submerged systems. Our external tubular membranes operate in a “crossflow” mode. This high-velocity flow creates turbulence that naturally cleans the membrane surface, allowing the system to handle much higher suspended solids (up to 30 g/L MLSS) and more complex chemical compositions without the frequent downtime required for cleaning submerged modules.

The modularity of our external UF units allows for easy upgrading and retrofitting of existing conventional activated sludge processes or SBR plants. Future capacity expansions can be easily accommodated by scaling up the modular units, offering long-term flexibility and adaptability to evolving treatment needs.

Our PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) membranes are engineered for extreme durability. They present high mechanical strength and are less susceptible to breakage. Even with the complexity of leachate applications, Berghof tubular membranes can reliably operate for an average of 8 years, ensuring long-term performance and reduced replacement frequency.

Yes. While the MBR serves as the core biological treatment step, the high-quality, particle-free effluent produced by our Ultrafiltration (UF) is the ideal feed for downstream processes like Reverse Osmosis (RO) or Nanofiltration (NF). By removing 100% of suspended solids and bacteria, the Tubular MBR protects the sensitive high-pressure membranes used in ZLD loops, significantly reducing their scaling and fouling potential.

Because the UF modules are located outside of the biological tank (External MBR), there is no need for heavy lifting equipment or draining the tanks for maintenance. This “out-of-tank” design allows for “maintenance-in-place,” meaning individual modules can be isolated for being serviced or inspected without shutting down the entire plant. This significantly reduces labor costs and minimizes downtime, which is critical for meeting municipal environmental mandates.
