The 8 mm inner diameter membrane modules of our high-solids tubular membranes makes them ideally suited for high-strength wastewaters and MBR applications while maintaining superior fouling resistance. Berghof Membranes offers a variety of membrane modules of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Both module types are available with backwashable and non-backwashable membranes.
The degrading, recycling and reuse of wastewater that contains high amounts of solids can be a real challenge for wastewater treatment plants. Although conventional activated sludge systems (CAS) can achieve the required degree of filtration, the prohibitive costs are a major downfall as these systems require a settler, sand filtration and disinfection. This results in a higher footprint for the wastewater treatment facility and a low permeate flow.
The innovative solutions from Berghof Membranes can operate at a low crossflow velocity of 1.0 – 2.0 m/s, meaning that our wastewater treatment systems are able to generate high fluxes (50 – 100 LMH) with low energy consumption (0.2 kWh/m3 – 0.8 kWh/m3).
Traditional wastewater treatment systems rely heavily on Clean-In-Place (CIP) protocols using relatively large quantities of chemicals which are costly and require operational shut-downs. Backwashable 8 mm membranes, when used in combination with the intelligent software technology by Berghof Membranes, allow the wastewater system to operate at a lower velocity, thus consuming less energy. During the backwash, in which clean water is pushed outside-in, fouling is removed from the membranes module by module. Therefore, the system continues to produce permeate during backwash because the backwash procedure is performed sequentially by the module. If backwash with permeate doesn’t eliminate fouling, the intelligent software will automatically initiate a chemical-enhanced backwash (CEB).
For crossflow filtration applications with high-strength wastewater, high crossflow velocity and pressure rates, our 8 mm non-backwashable membranes are the ideal choices. Our membrane durability and excellent fouling resistance ensure long membrane life and optimal membrane performance.
