PRODUCED WATER TREATMENT

Key Message

E&P companies that are open to implement innovative approaches for water reuse will benefit from very positive impacts. Not only will they be more committed with sustainability and improve the public perception, but their profitability will increase by means of the reduced fresh water consumption and lower disposal cost.

Direct UF for produced water treatment

Berghof tubular UF is a barrier for oil, suspended and colloidal matter, and bacteria. And what is more important, even under spikes in the produced water characteristics the effluent quality is consistent 100% of the time. The ultrafiltration system is typically implemented after the primary treatment for bulk oil removal with CPI, hydro cyclone, flotation and allows removing the emulsified oil without using chemicals.

Our external UF systems for oily wastewater treatment are based on backwashable 5 mm membranes. The crossflow operation, together with the implementation of advanced and automated fouling control strategies, such as backwash, and CEB, allows the most stable and reliable operation in a compact system and with minimum chemical consumption.

Produced water treatment - the process

Oil generally comes out of the well mixed with water and some amounts of gas. The water stream generated in the 3-phase separator is the so-called produced water: a complex oily wastewater that requires treatment before disposal. There are several technologies for removing the free and dispersed oil: coalescent plate interceptor (CPI), hydrocyclones and flotation are the most applied ones. Afterwards, the tubular ultrafiltration removes the emulsified oil and produces a superior quality effluent, free of oil, particles and bacteria. This permeate can be directly re-injected into the reservoir for pressure maintenance or enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Alternatively, it can be further treated with RO for removing the dissolved pollutants before disposal into water bodies.
