MBR DIGESTATE TREATMENT

Key Message

Digestate biological treatment demands a robust technology. External tubular MBR copes with the digestate treatment with maximum efficiency: the bioprocess operates in a stable way, with the best nitrification rates. Berghof tubular membranes provide the smooth and reliable operation required by the operators of biogas plants.

Benefits of digestate treatment with MBR and tubular UF

The MBR consists of a biological reactor combining anoxic and aerobic stages for carbon and nitrogen removal, coupled to the Berghof tubular UF for biomass/effluent separation. This technology for digestate treatment has numerous advantages over the conventional biological processes and the submerged MBRs:

The external tubular MBR for dairy wastewater treatment has numerous advantages over the conventional biological processes and the submerged MBRs:

Highly efficient

Highly efficient biological treatment: the operation at high MLSS concentration (12 – 15 g/L, up to 30 g/L) provides long sludge ages, which intensifies the biological activity and promotes the assimilation of slowly biodegradable organic matter.

Customizable

Berghof Membranes developed B-SMART®, a customizable external membrane filtration system that can be designed with various features and functionalities.

Effluent Quality

Superb effluent quality: the tubular MBR produces a solid-free effluent, with turbidity lower than 0.5 NTU and SDI < 3. It can be further treated with RO systems allowing more than 99% removal for carbon, total solids and nitrogen.

Robustness

Robustness against the complex composition of digestate. The filtration conditions in Berghof tubular UF are easily adapted to influent fluctuations, providing the most stable operation under any circumstance.

Compact and modular

Compactness and modularity: external tubular MBRs are one of the most compact technologies for digestate treatment. UF systems are 100% modular and very easily upgradable.

MBR Digestate treatment - the process

Digestate is the main residual product from biogas plants. The liquid fraction obtained in the decanter is fed to the tubular MBR, where organic matter and nutrients are removed by combining anoxic and aerobic reactors. The external tubular modules coupled to the biological process produce a free-of-solids permeate that can be pos-treated with reverse osmosis. The effluent is therefore discharged, fulfilling the strictest environmental regulations, or it can be reused for irrigation or other industrial purposes.
