EFFLUENT POLISHING

Key Message

Refineries and petrochemical facilities face an increasing need for upgrading and retrofitting their existing treatment plants. New regulations require superior quality for discharge in water bodies. Moreover, the change in the type of crude processed to heavier or salty ones results in different wastewater characteristics, and may require further treatment. Berghof Membranes possess significant references for effluent polishing in high-capacity treatment plants in refineries and petrochemical industry.

Direct UF for effluent polishing

As long as the water stress increases and the expenses for fresh water and discharge fees are higher, many refineries and petrochemical facilities are demanding tertiary treatment technologies for effluent polishing. In this way, they are able to reuse the treated water within the industrial process, obtaining significant savings. Berghof offers the tubular UF technology with 5mm membranes for tertiary treatment, to be installed after the existing conventional biological treatment. With proven references operating successfully in refineries and petrochemical installations, we can help the Oi l& Gas industry to be more sustainable and cost-competitive.

Effluent polishing for the oil and gas sector - the process

When there is a need for improving the effluent quality in existing plants, tubular ultrafiltration is installed after the biological treatment, usually based on conventional activated sludge process. The effluent from the clarifier is fed to the ultrafiltration modules, producing a polished permeate and a concentrated reject, which is sent back to the DAF process.

The UF permeate can be discharged to a water body or been reused, either directly or after removing the dissolved compounds with reverse osmosis.
